Curriculum

The Applewood School believes that play is a very important element that provides the foundation for children’s development. Play encourages children to be creative while developing essential skills such as imagination, physical, emotional & cognitive skills, dexterity, problem solving, and self-confidence. Play is fundamental to early brain and language development.

Our emphasis is on persistently encouraging and motivating our students through an enriching environment with activities that promote healthy development. Please know that we will discourage any violent play and redirect children to more social and constructive types of play. If violent play becomes excessive, we will request a meeting with the family to discuss a plan of action.

We strive to provide a developmentally appropriate curriculum and environment while offering an exceptional learning experience. We incorporate multiple instructional models aligned with Colorado Early Learning Guidelines and National Common Core Standards.

Our structured curriculum begins in the Great Minds (preschool) classrooms and varies in its level of structure between classrooms. Children build upon their knowledge, and teachers introduce more complex ideas as students move toward graduation from The Applewood School.

Set curriculums used in Great Minds include:
  • Math: Hands-On Standards
  • Social & Emotional: Second-Step
  • Phonics: Zoophonics
  • Handwriting: Handwriting Without Tears
