Drop Off
Drop off can be challenging for everyone involved. We stress the importance of teaching your child that, when they arrive at school, it is time to say goodbye. We explain that moms and dads always come back. Long drop offs often teach children that, when they express certain behaviors, they can get their parents to stay longer. Thus, it is best to drop off your child, say goodbye, and leave. Please understand that, although both you and your child may be emotional at drop off, this transition will only last temporarily. Typically, with your child’s teachers there to comfort your child, your child will recover quickly and happily join their peers in daily activities.
Independence
Learning manners is a big part of our class. Children are taught to use manners at the table and during play. We also work hard on sitting appropriately at the table (bellies up, feet on the floor). Children are encouraged to use words and/or signs to express their needs (e.g. please, more, all done). During play, we work on being gentle with classmates. We talk a lot about using gentle/nice hands, and we learn new ways to share and play together.
American Sign Language
While we encourage children to begin using language, in this class we also understand that many children do not yet have any words to communicate. For this reason, we introduce sign language to help children get their needs met. We focus on a new sign each week.
Parent Board
The weekly sign, color, and shape are posted on the parent board weekly. The schedule, menu, and lesson plans for each week/month will also be posted. We post specific activities that we do each day on the white board along with teachers who were present in the classroom each day.
